Target Beauty Box Fall 2014 (Unboxing)

I was surprised to see this arrive in the mail yesterday. I know I am late to the party for the Target Beauty Box but thought I should still do an unboxing because they are fun. I especially like the lipstick color that came in my Target Beauty Box. It seems like the lipstick is the only item in the box that you do not know what color you will get until it arrives. This box only costs $7 on Target.com but does include tax depending on where you live and it ships for free. If you have a Target RED Card the 5% discount still applies to this order.

When you first open the box you are greeted with a card that says "Hello Beautiful!" that includes a $3 off coupon on a beauty purchase of $15 or more. The largest items in the Fall Target Beauty Box are the L'Oreal Elnett Extra Strong Hold Hairspray and the Fekkai Professional Blowout Hair Refresher Dry Shampoo. I never heard of the Elnett line for hair styling products so this is new to me. It takes forever for me to use a bottle of hairspray so here is another to add to my collection. 

I have heard of Fekkai before and their hair styling products are mid-range in price point compared to other brands. I just started getting into the habit of using dry shampoos when I wake up because it does help with greasy hair buildup at the roots and makes it less flat. I hope this works as well as the Klorane Dry Shampoo, which I currently use.

I don't know if Laneige is the "first" to do this as it claims on their sample packaging but this form of application is not new to me. I have been using a BB cream air cushion since I was first introduced to it by my friend when I visited her in Korea in 2012. She told me that this was the "new thing" in skincare for Korea for that year and urged me to buy one because this type of application was better than dotting your face with bb cream and smoothing it out with a brush. 

I agree with her that using a BB cream air cushion does leave to a smoother application with a dewy finish with no caking. I remember coming back to America in 2012 and was unable to find anything like it. Now that it is 2014, there are a few choices out there.

I was really excited about seeing this item as part of the Target Beauty Box and it was my second reason for ordering it. I wanted try out the Laneige version of the BB cream air cushion because the current one I use (a Korean brand) is expensive and if I could find one that works as well at a cheaper price then that would be great. The Laneige BB Air Cushion is around $34 at Target (0.5 oz  full size).

*If you want to do comparison shopping: My current BB Air Cushion is the IOPE Air Cushion XP SPF 50+ (Korea) by Amore Pacific. I paid about $36 USD/38,000KRW in Korea (included 1 refill) and online it's between $40 - $50. Amore Pacific came out with a line similar to IOPE for the US market and it's available on Sephora for $60 (includes 1 refill).

The L'Oreal Colour Riche Extraordinaire Lipstick applies like a lip gloss. When you twist off the top, it is a lip gloss applicator wand and not an actual lipstick. I did a quick test and I actually like this a lot. It applies more like a lip stain where it is weightless but feels a bit like lip gloss. If you smack your lips, you do hear a pop sound. When removing it, it does feel sticky if you wipe off with your hand, feeling similar to Stila Lip Glosses.

The color Ruby Opera looks like how it appears on the tube. It's a bit red or a bit berry depending on the lighting. You only need to apply a little to get good color payoff and gives the right amount of shine with a slight "wet" appearance. It does have a hint of small pink sparkles if you look closely when applied on the lips. Overall, I am very happy with this lipstick. I think this color would be flattering for any skin tone.

The final product unveiled is the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk. I have used NYX before and I think their stuff is pretty good quality for a drugstore brand. I was in need of a white eyeliner with no sparkles and this happens to be it. I read other reviewers saying that they don't know what they could do with a white eye pencil so here are some suggestions. 

Personally, I like to use white as an underlying layer for when I want an eyeshadow to pop. One of my friends taught me this trick. So let's say that you have an eyeshadow color that doesn't show up well on your skin tone. If you own a eyeshadow palette with a bunch of colors, this could happen. All you have to do is apply a swipe of white first and ta-da! Apply that once invisible color on top and you have eye popping color.

Another trick you can do is to use this for the waterline or parts of the eye you want to highlight (like on the corners or on to line the bottom eyelid) to give your eyes a more awake and alert look. You just need to experiment to see what works for your eye shape. This works with any white eye pencil but do be extra careful if you are using a jumbo size liner like the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil.
